The Invisible Asian Strikes Again

In Vancouver, Asians should not be seen nor heard. This seems to be a recurring theme. On one hand you have the ingrained Asian timidity and on the other hand you have non Asians who become used to the status quo, and are only to happy to enforce this rule with abuse and harassment.

As a novice blogger, I can received a Crank call while twittering about racial injustices in Vancouver.

Recently I heard that a community leader Karen Fung was harrased by a Youtube user just because she and Roland Tanglao who is also a community giant, as well as being a highly intelligent and experienced futurist had an opinion.

Here were some comments left on Youtube:

"Welcome to TRANSTINK! A fucking useless system praised by a fucking asian! Welcome to HONGCOUVER!"

"ALL CHINAMEN LOOK THE SAME!"

Typical, fucking chinks speaking about this fucking skytrain. But then, chinks are so fucking stupid. Welcome to HONGCOUVER!"

Once again the fucking idiots in the lower mainland think skytrain is such a great system. But it is the fucking shits. It is always breaking down, the cars are too small for the amount of people in the lower mainland and with the amount of chinks riding it, it is the oriental express. A fucking useless system."

I watch how people interact with me and a friend who is Caucasian in an open space. People would come up to her introduce their names and ask her what her name was while not noticing me. Now these are liberal artsy types not conservative right wingers. They are good people, but to me, I feel as if I might not even exist in any capacity.

I see how my parents working in the garden of their house are mistaken as hired help, so when they try to make friends with neighbours, they are ignored, because not everyone is charitable enough to talk to the gardener. A Caucasian lady who rents a suite is mistaken as the owner of the house on the other hand.

I had a look at the website of Harbour Dance dance school, as I love this school, it is terribly progressive, or so I thought. From having attended this school, I know that there are many amazing people including Asian teachers and students, unfortunately they are again the invisible people of British Columbia. The only possible Asian image, is the backs of some guys, hey great shot!

My new habit is going to be to encourage action rather than just focusing on negative. So if you are Asian ish, consider your personal image. Are you hiding from the spotlight? If so, realize you are playing into the hands of those that do not want you to be accepted into the mainstream as a Canadian.

If you are not Asian, consider what role you believe Asians should play in Canada. Do you believe even unconsciously that Asians should just go back to Asia? I can't quite blame you as the word 'Asian' means from Asia, or 'Chinese' means from China as well as categorizing ethnicity. Just want to point out that there have been Asians living in Canada for as long as any Caucasian, and have also contributed their fair share to the making of Canada. One has only to investigate Barkerville.

If you still believe that Asians have no place in Canada, only Caucasians, then explain that to me, in the comments below. Why should Caucasians have more right, should this country be based on meritocracy or racial patronage?

Irony

The ultimate irony about the racist YouTube comments was that he left them on one video in which sillygwailo made an appearance (not pictured, if you're wondering). I'm grateful that his sentiments appear to be a minority opinion, but I'm also not foolish enough to think it's not more common than we'd like it to be.
