Is Tyra Racist?

As my boyfriend knows, I love America's Next Top Model, and of course the fabulous Tyra. There is something about a strong female figure, that delights me greatly.

A local daily had an article about why smart women like to watch brainless tv, as a way to escape, showing a picture of Cycle 11 contestant Sheena Sakai / Satana with a caption asking if you were disappointed that Sheena did not win.

My curiosity piqued, as I wondered how many people were voting for Sheena. What was the general comments out in the world of web? One of my first articles I came across, accused Tyra of being racist.

I thought, Tyra, proud black lady, model citizen? Nah! I love Tyra, no way is she racist.

Then when watching Sheena's introduction to Tyra, I heard something that I did not hear before. Sheena introduced herself as being from Harlem. Tyra proceeds to ask her what her nationality is. I was stunned. Did I just hear Tyra asking Sheena where she came from? It is obvious to almost everyone watching that Sheena is obviously from America.

It appears there are others that confuse nationality with race or ethnicity. I scoured through other introductions to Tyra, nope no asking of black or white ladies what their nationality was... oh wait, this lady Brittany, that looks Middle Eastern but is actually mixed black and native also gets asked what her nationality is. I cannot believe it, wtf is going on?

Is this the same Tyra Banks, who on her talk shows brings up questions of identity and race? I watch it, and am proud of Tyra for talking about issues that are not normally touched with a 10 foot pole.

However one of the comments on the racialicious blog, points out that as Oprah as Tyra is trying to be, in her comments to a Chinese and Korean lady, Tyra seems to think that "Chinese and Koreans should automatically have some special bond, more so than Koreans and Blacks or Chinese and Blacks." OMG, Tyra is not as incredibly enlightened as I had come to assume. She is just a touch little racist, and doesn't even know it. I feel as if I am indulging myself in a little guilty pleasure, she is not as perfect as I thought she was.

Of course she is pretty much perfect, and still one of my idols, I think the featured group Guess My Race is a great idea.
